Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has unveiled an ambitious subsea cable project codenamed “Project Waterworth.” This initiative aims to deploy the world’s longest subsea cable network, stretching over 50,000 kilometers, which is longer than the Earth’s circumference. The project will span five major continents, including North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and potentially other key regions like India and South Africa.
Project Waterworth is designed to enhance global digital highways with high-speed connectivity required for AI innovation. The multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment will open three new trans-oceanic corridors to support the increasing demands of digital infrastructure. The cables will be laid as deep as 7,000 meters under the ocean and will employ innovative routing techniques and enhanced burial methods to ensure resilience against environmental risks.
This project aligns with Meta’s efforts to strengthen the digital highway infrastructure, enabling greater economic cooperation, facilitating digital inclusion, and opening opportunities for technological development in these regions. It also underscores Meta’s commitment to pioneering subsea cable advancements and meeting the unprecedented capacity required by an interconnected world.
